Laparoscopic Hysterectomy Procedure
Patients are often concerned when they are offered hysterectomy to treat their gynaecological symptoms, because of what they have heard about the magnitude of the operation, the substantial post-operative pain and convalescence, often associated with a major abdominal incision. Happily, things have moved on and we are now able to offer hysterectomy as a laparoscopic (key hole) procedure to many patients, offering substantial reduction in the length of stay, pain relief and convalescent time.
The surgical procedure is performed by two consultants operating together, and over a 100 procedures have now been completed, with no patients requiring open surgery, and an average length of stay of just one night in hospital. Some patients have even gone home as day cases. Feedback from patients has been extremely positive with some patients keen to share their experiences on our website gynaechoicev2.createclients.co.uk.
Common indications include fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic pain and menstrual symptoms which have failed to respond to simpler treatments with the Mirena coil or endometrial ablation. Obesity is seldom a contraindication and our complication rates have been very low with minimal blood loss. Patients have told us that they feel back to normal by 3-4 weeks post-operatively. The procedure is approved by NICE and is an important new development in gynaecology offering real benefits to patients.
