Laparoscopic Hysterectomies

Written by Keith Louden, Consultant Gynaecologist at Gynaechoice

There has been endless debate in gynaecology over the best route for hysterectomy for particular indications. Laparoscopic hysterectomy can be considered for a wide variety of indications where hysterectomy is indicated, offering patients substantial reductions in length of stay, analgaesic requirements and convalescence.

Gynaechoice offers laparoscopic total and sub-total hysterectomy for suitable patients. Surgery is undertaken by two of our consultants working together – Keith Louden and Adam Moors. We have undertaken around 300 of these operations, and patients often only stay for one night – in fact, some of them have been able to return home on the same day as their procedure.

Common indications include fibroids up to about eighteen weeks in size, endometriosis and pelvic pain and menorrhagia after failure of conservative treatment with Mirena or endometrial ablation.

Patients tell us that they feel back to normal by three weeks after their operation, and overall feedback about this operation has been extremely positive – many of our patients have shared their experiences on our website, www.gynaechoice.co.uk.

Referrals can be made via the Gynaechoice office at the The Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital, telephone number 02380 273 142.
