A hysteroscopy procedure is a gynaecological examination using a hysteroscope, which is a thin telescope that is inserted through the cervix into the uterus. Hysteroscopes are so thin that they can fit through the cervix with minimal or no dilation. A sample (also known as a pipelle) or curettings may be taken. Polyps and fibroids can be removed with this treatment.
Diagnostic hysteroscopy can be performed as an out-patient. More complex operative hysteroscopy procedures are performed as a day case with a general anaesthetic.
